Year 1 WOW Day April 2021
To start our new topic Amazing Africa Turquoise and Green Class went on a safari for our Wow Day. We began by discussing what the word safari means, what we would need to take with us and what we might see.
Before going on safari, we identified we would need to take with us; a sun hat, a water bottle, sun cream, binoculars and a compass. We made binoculars out of cardboard tubes, made a compass out of paper plates and drew maps to guide us on our travels.
We went out into the playground on our ‘safari’, the children worked in small groups and had to search for QR codes and scan them using their iPads, each code showed an animal that they might see on safari and a fact about that animal.
“Learning about African animals is amazing!” – Farida.
Pink Class also had a visit from little lost lion cub. We found him outside the classroom door with a little suitcase and a note. He said he had lost his pride and needed our help to get home. We looked inside his suitcase and found some clues. The first clue was a cut up jigsaw. When we put the jigsaw back together we saw that is was a map of the continents of the world. We discussed what continents there are, what continent we live on and which continent we think the lion cub may have come from.
In his suitcase, the lion had also bought a new book for us to read – One Day on Our Blue Planet in the Savannah. We discussed what a savannah is and looked at some images.
Finally, we looked at some traditional African patterns on masks and discussed what some tribes may use masks for. We used crayon to create our patterns on our masks and then used watercolours to add a wash of colour.
