Year R Fantastic Finish May 2021
Reception have had a lovely day rounding off their topic 'Food, Glorious Food.' Our focus book for this half term has been No Dinner! by Jessica Souhami, this is a traditional tale about an old lady and a pumpkin, told across the Indian sub-continent. The children thoroughly enjoyed the book and loved researching and discovering facts about India and Indian animals.
We began our day with an Indian dance workshop, the children thoroughly enjoyed this Bollywood dance experience provided by Jo from Dance Days. The children loved her costume and longed to wear a skirt with chimes like her! The session was energetic and engaging for all children involved. They were absorbed and eager to learn the dance sequence. The children learned some mudras which are a key element of Bollywood dancing, their favourites included the peacock and the lotus flower. Some children even remembered that a Peacock is the national bird of India.
Later in the day, the children made and tried Indian Spicy Rice, they carefully followed the recipe as a class. The corridor was full of a delicious aroma all day! We smelt the spices first and discussed what they reminded us of, some of them were familiar to some children and are used in cooking at home. We also spent time learning facts about India and completing various Indian crafts. Jo taught us that you end a Bollywood dance by bowing and saying 'namaste' which has three meanings in Hindi, "hello," "goodbye" and "thank you" we ended out day by saying "Namaste" as we left to go home.
